OUR INNOVATIVE PROJECT
Olympic Housing Trust is creating Chimacum Commons: a permanently affordable housing and land project, built on land donated by Jefferson Land Trust.
Located in the heart of Chimacum, the project includes farmland conservation, affordable housing and habitat restoration. The majority of the 16-acre property will remain farmland that will be permanently protected by a conservation easement.
The team is led by the goal to serve and enhance the local food system. The vision goes beyond housing alone and includes the working land as a keystone for the project and local economy. By offering permanently affordable housing designed for and marketed towards food-system workers, the team recognizes that land stewardship and housing stability go hand in hand.
By working together, the team has created a project with significant buy-in through engaging with neighboring farms, potential residents and funders in the community to create a project that represents Chimacum.
Chimacum Commons includes homeownership and rental opportunities in a variety of housing typesfit for seasonal and permanent residents. Ranging from private studios to single family homes, the designs reflect the real world needs of the residents. For example, the rentals will be built durably to last many generations with building materials that will be sourced, where possible, from our local forests and quarries.
The property is zoned Rural Residential-5 (RR-5) and the development team plans to use a Planned Rural Residential Development (PRRD) permit in order to cluster the housing away from the creek and off the active farm land.
